Winter sun

When the winter sun lifts its head above the horizon
For a brief few hours our hearts are lightened
As we remember the warmth and buzz of summer.
But for now, the land lies cold, hibernating
Waiting for that angle of light that signals
New beginnings – Spring.

Daily Prompt: Snow definition – a dog’s perspective

_1570868

When a familiar landscape becomes a foreign field

Populated with overlarge, cold, white hominoids

Of terrifying proportions;  when missiles

Equally white, fly through the air – war of the juveniles

Descending slopes on their terrible toboggans

Squealing war cries of joy, fear and warning;

Alien world of crusty icing sugaredness

Powdery beneath the paws and scents and trails

Vanished beneath  a cloak of icy invisibility.

Beautiful covering coming silently from the sky

Like white stars and hexagonal doilies.

Lickable and likeable in tongue meltingness.

Colours

Grey, damp and depressing and

The sun hovers just above the horizon

So that days are short and nights long.

A chill envelops me and I cough

Cough up my guts and sniffle.

Oh for summer months and

warm, long days with flowers

In the garden – a sensation  of

Colour and scents and glory

At life so profuse. It will come.

And in the meantime, I will dream.

It’s cold

And the winter darkness draws in

As snow threatens from low hanging clouds.

There is an iciness in the air

Seeping into your very bones

And although you rub your hands together

And stamp your feet,

Your breath hangs like cloud in the air.

Nothing can make you warm

The whole world seems frozen.

And then you reach your doorstep

And the lights are on:

The door opens and the heat hits

Bringing an ache of warmth

As you remove fingers one by one

From your gloves.

The rich smell of cinnamon bake wafts

From the kitchen

And there’s a welcome voice and a bear hug

to greet you.

And then a little hand creeps

Into your big hand

And pulls you giggling and unresisting

Towards the glowing embers of

A log fire.

And you melt into what is

Home.
