Daily Prompt: River

P1540375_2

Welling up from nowhere, fluid freshness
Snaking its way through the grass
Squelching underfoot and seeping
Through the stitching of my boots.

Clear, sweet liquid; fountain of life
Forming rivulets between the tussocks
And carrying tiny particles as it flows
Always downward; mind of its own.

Whispering, chattering, bubbling
With life, love, laughter
Skipping  over pebbles and
Forcing crevices anew.

Water; slaking thirsts of plants
And animals alike: little rivers
Of refreshment joined by others
And swelling the ranks as it flows.

Widening, the trickle grows
Splashing over boulders and hiding
Fish within its eddies. Under-currents.
Swirling and twirling with coolness.

And suddenly down the steep slope
Falling a sweet cascade of sparkling light
And sound of rushing gurgles
Crashing down a precipice of stone.

And ever onwards always flowing along
The lowest path; rushing from mountain
To valley and slowing to sluggishness
As it meanders to the sea.

Water more precious than gold
Life saver of all; transparent and clear
Yet combining every colour of the rainbow
Promise of life from heaven to earth.

Daily Prompt: The forest at dusk

P1430530

As the sun dropped from a cold winter sky and the last rays filtered into the forest, the chill turned reds to blues and greens to greys. I caught my breath as  crackling ice crept into the undergrowth and night-time creatures hooted from their nests or tripped from their holes moving into the freezing dusk. I had a vague sense of unease as light turned to dark and I had to remind myself that this was the same world it was minutes before.

And yet I was aware it was not.

Daily Prompt: The Groyne

_1450469

Chord changer of waves

Land to sea  harmoniser

The ocean’s  fret board.

This is a rather steely picture of the sea along the Norfolk coast where the groynes extend far into the sea to stop the erosion. It reminded me of a guitar fret board!

Watching for the dawn

_1540154

Waiting in the darkness

Listening to the shift between

Dark and Light

The silent moments

Before the world changes.

Scanning the horizon

For the gathering greyness

That signals the new day.

The first bird tweets before light

And the fox slinks back to its burrow.

And then there it is

Suddenly above the hillside

A glimmer of dawn.

There is an exhalation of delight

Among us and a relaxation

Of shoulders held tense.

The new day has come

And we can glory and rejoice

In a new light.

Daily Prompt: Stormtroopers

_1580289Warriors of destruction
Galactic Empire soldiers
Darth Vader's ground troops
Legions of terror.

Swiftly deployed
To crush opposition
Elite mixed forces,
Of aliens, humans clones

Trained to be loyal
Numbered in white armour
Dangerous to encounter
Against the thinking of the free.

Opposition to the Jedi.
Acting on orders
Without individualism
None of them free.

May we thwart their purpose
Use intellect against them
And let the force be with us
To win; to be free.

There is a currently an exhibition of Star Wars in our local museum. 900 people attended on the opening day and queued from the early morning to get in. I have enjoyed the Star Wars movies though I am not an avid fan. The words above sum up how I have interpreted my impression of the stormtroopers. Please correct me if you think I am wrong. 🙂

Daily Prompt: The frozen pond

_1570008
The pond that once held frogs and water boatmen
Swimming intermittently between the fronds of weed
Allowed dragonflies to dip; hawk-like hunters across the surface
And was the habitat for newts, their long-tails trailing as they swam,
Is now frigid; solid with ice that doesn’t even crack
Beneath the force of a snowball.
Nothing splashes in the deep, dark depths
No heron stands at the edge statuesque and still
Seeking the slightest movement to spear with its beak.
Instead there is a still, glassiness reflecting the blue winter sky
The deer cannot drink; and the ducks can only skate across the surface
For the sub-zero, arctic winds have brought the beast from the east
And we must abide the glacial freeze as bleak winter bites.

Daily Prompt: It came from the east

P1390518

It came from the East: this huge raging beast

Shrieking through crevices of rock.

It whipped up huge  waves

In mountains and swirls.

Crashed into the coast and the caves.

It churned  the sea bed;

Tore the beach to a shred

Gathering shingle and stones

It  spit back.

It shattered the cliffs

And gnawed at the shore

Receding …….

Then breaking once more

Rhythmically pounding

The surf ever sounding

A barrage penetrating

Your core.
